But as for the dial styling, no worries, it still retains most distinctive elements of the A386, including the applied faceted markers, the white-painted hands with luminous and black inserts, the trapezoidal date window at 4:30 and the double scale on the periphery. To differentiate these new models from the limited Revival watches, Zenith replaces the old calibre with the same movement found in the Chronomaster Sport, which has an impact on the display itself. The dial and its display are certainly where these watches show the deepest evolution. More a casual watch than a true sports watch, water-resistance is rated at 50 metres, which is enough for most conditions. The case is nicely executed, as you would expect from Zenith, and features sapphire crystals front and caseback. It has presence, comfort, a certain elegance and feels perfectly proportioned.įor this new launch, Zenith introduces five references, with options for stainless steel, as presented here, and also for 18k rose gold. With its thin casebands – most of the height is absorbed by the crystal and the caseback – and its compact dimensions, the new Chronomaster Original is just spot-on. It also comes in one diameter option, the most desirable of them all, 38mm, just like the historic watch. The design of the Zenith Chronomaster Original is directly modelled after the A386, with its round central case, its sharp faceted lugs, its bezel-less architecture, the classic pump-style pushers, a raised and domed sapphire crystal, and finally, a mix of radial-brushed surfaces and polished accents. But the spirit of the A386 is still alive. Today, the Chronomaster Original adopts the same proportions and design as the Revival models but drastically updates its mechanics and changes its display. All were 1:1 re-editions, equipped with the classic Calibre 400 and meant to be collectable items. In fact, in 2019, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the El Primero, the brand released various “Revival” editions based on the A386, such as a rare steel model, a trilogy of gold watches and a manufacture edition with a tri-blue dial. It isn’t the first time that Zenith pays tribute to this watch. In fact, visually speaking, it is even closer to the original model than the previous 38mm Chronomaster was. This new 2021 Zenith Chronomaster Original pays tribute to the A386. But it was only for a few months since Zenith’s classic chronograph, now dubbed Chronomaster Original, is here to fill the gap. Earlier this year, however, Zenith discontinued this model, leaving space only for the Chronomaster Sport and its more modern approach to the El Primero concept. For years, the brand had a watch in its portfolio that could be regarded as a tribute to this vintage model, the classic 38mm Chronomaster with silver dial, tri-colour counters, bezel-less case and Calibre El Primero 400, the closest you could get to the original 1969 movement. This specific watch, the A386, is not only highly collectable and sought-after, but it has also been a source of profound inspiration for Zenith over the years. This trilogy comprises the A384, a tonneau-shaped panda-dial model, the A385, featuring the same case but with an original gradient brown dial (possibly the first of its kind) and the A386, the most classic of the three models, with a round case but also the watch that first showed the signature tri-colour sub-counters, something that has become a hallmark of Zenith. It is the most iconic model in the trilogy introduced in 1969, the three watches created by Zenith to feature its newly developed and innovative movement, the El Primero calibre, regarded as one of the earliest automatic chronograph movements. The name “A386” will certainly resonate in the mind of vintage watch lovers as one of the most emblematic models ever to be produced by the Le Locle-based manufacture. Here is the Zenith Chronomaster Original, the revamped 38mm El Primero and the successor to the A386 watch. Indeed, the classic 38mm, bezel-less Chronomaster is back, with more modern mechanics and a powerful vintage-inspired design. But this slightly larger and more modern take on the El Primero wasn’t meant to be a replacement. This very watch was, however, discontinued when the attractive Chronomaster Sport was introduced earlier this year. For long, the name Chronomaster has been associated at Zenith with an El Primero-powered (what else…) classic chronograph, without an external bezel, often with tri-colour sub-dials and available either in 42mm or in an even more desirable, historically relevant 38mm diameter, inspired by the legendary A386 model of 1969.

The example below shows how to find all double paragraph returns and replace them with one paragraph return. If you’ve got a document with a bunch of incorrect formatting (for example, extra paragraph returns, extra spaces, or tabs), it’s easy to fix them with Find/Replace ( how to use Find/Replace in Word). If you’ve indented the first line of each paragraph, that is enough visual separation between paragraphs. There should be exactly one paragraph return between each paragraph. (And if you just can’t break the habit of typing two spaces, see the Find/Replace tip below.) Most people know this, but we have seen it! If you have “show paragraph marks” turned on, you can see where you have any unnecessary spaces in your document. Unless you are living in 1950, do not use two spaces after a period. You can also easily create a paragraph style for your references (more on paragraph styles below). Reference lists should be styled with a hanging indent, but again please don’t use tabs to accomplish this ( how to create a hanging indent in Word). Use the autoformatting option to indent, or use a paragraph style to do it ( how to indent the first line in Word). The first line of each paragraph should be indented, but it should not start with a tab character. Your goal should be to make the manuscript as easy to read as possible, with as little formatting as possible. Turn on “show paragraph marks” in your word processing software, so you can see that your formatting marks are correct. Your publisher will be putting your text into a layout software (usually InDesign), and all this extra formatting will get in the way once they apply the styles within InDesign. It’s important that there’s not any extra style formatting in the manuscript, like extra spaces, paragraph returns, and tabs. If you start off composing within the guidelines, then you’ll have much less to do at the end! Future self will thank you. Going back through a completed manuscript and fixing all the formatting is tedious. It will be the least work if you read through the publisher’s formatting guidance as early as possible in the process. But you can do most of the same things in Google Docs and other word processing programs! Start early *I’ve provided links to how-to instructions in Microsoft Word throughout, as that’s what many authors will be using. So, be awesome! If you follow this advice, it really won’t be so bad. They’ve had authors do everything wrong, and it has made them want to tear their hair out. Your publisher has solid reasons for all the many formatting guidelines they provide. When a manuscript doesn’t adhere to their formatting guidelines, it can slow down the production timeline and take up staff time that would be better spent on editing manuscripts or doing marketing and promotion. They spend enormous resources (time and money) preparing books for publication. However, it’s also extremely important for publishers. It’s true, formatting your manuscript for submission can be tedious and time-consuming. I can hear many of you authors out there collectively groaning, or perhaps you are putting off actually formatting your manuscript as you look for advice to make it all seem easier. Their V-shaped sound profile ensures your audio has adequate rumble and body while voices and instruments sound bright and sparkly. They have a solid continuous battery life of nearly eight hours, but they don't have an auto-off timer, and their case holds nearly two additional charges, which is one fewer than our previous picks' cases. Unlike the Sennheiser, they support multi-device pairing, meaning you can stay connected with your phone and computer simultaneously. These don't have the premium build or battery life of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3, but they offer a similar noise cancelling performance. Best Mid-Range Wireless Earbuds For Androidįor something more affordable than our upper mid-range pick, you'll want to consider the Google Pixel Buds Pro Truly Wireless. However, they aren't good for streaming video with an Android phone since they have high latency. If you want slimmer, less bulky earbuds, the Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) Truly Wireless are worth considering, even for Android users, since they have a lighter, more compact design and a similar ANC performance. The case also holds three extra charges if you need a top-up. Their battery lasts longer on a single charge, though, at around 8.5 hours. These earbuds aren't quite as comfortable as the Bose since their stability fins can pressure your ears. If you prefer a different sound, you can use a graphic EQ and presets in the app to personalize your mix. However, this also results in elements like voices and instruments sounding dull and veiled. Out of the box, their bass-heavy sound profile brings out the thump and punch in your audio, mainly because the treble range is underemphasized. They also have low latency with Android devices, which is nice for streaming video, and they have an Android-compatible app. However, the ANC does an excellent job of isolating you from unwanted disturbances. Their ANC feature doesn't block out as much ambient noise, so they aren't ideal for loud situations like commuting or walking on a busy street. If you want to spend a little less, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 are a cheaper option that isn't too much of a step down from the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II Truly Wireless in terms of performance. Best Upper Mid-Range Wireless Earbuds For Android.Even though they're bulky in design, they're still comfortable enough for long listening sessions. Luckily, you can fine-tune their sound to suit your tastes using their companion app's EQ and presets. Subjectively, this extra bass muddies and clutters vocals and instruments. These buds have a more bass-heavy sound profile than we can measure due to the shape of our rig's ear canals. With their ANC on, they last nearly seven hours, and if you need to top up their battery life, their carrying case holds three additional charges. They have a powerful noise cancelling (ANC) system that blocks most ambient noise across the spectrum. These premium buds are the next generation of the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds Truly Wireless and have low latency on Android devices, which ensures that your audio and visuals stay in sync while you're streaming video. Anderson, who per usual wrote the script, unfolds the film article by article - starting with front-of-book local color by way of a bike tour through the magazine’s headquarters of Ennui-sur-Blasé, France, a place where altar boys wreak havoc on the elderly for laughs and an average of 8.25 bodies per year gets fished out of the local river. It is a magazine in movie form, taking its title from the fictional French Dispatch, a Sunday supplement to the also-fictional Liberty Kansas Evening Sun. Yet it pays similar tribute to the ingenuity and style that have defined Anderson’s previous features. The French Dispatch, the director’s tenth feature, differs for being an anthology film - four stories for the price of one. And you watch to see what contraption of a world the equally clever Anderson has invented to capture them doing it. Better to let it play like a Rube Goldberg machine: You watch to see how they did it. The escape is too cheekily conceived for triumph not to feel like a foregone conclusion. The Grand Budapest Hotel gave us a prison break so clever that it’s almost more memorable for the crafty resourcefulness at play than for the suspense of the scene. In Isle of Dogs, a scene of sushi being prepared renders the practice into an art form and the chef, hands nimbler than a heart surgeon’s, into an artist. It is, for me, one of their better qualities. This, as much as his well-documented stylistic habits (the tragicomic romanticism and nostalgia, the fantastical insistence on visual balance and emotionally coded-color schemes) is what has defined his movies. Anderson has always displayed affection for great craft - and for the artist-geniuses responsible for that craft, including the collaborators who’ve made his cosmetically pristine, well-coiffed cinematic style possible over the years. Nevertheless, The French Dispatch feels inevitable.īut thankfully not in the obvious ways. He is also a director known for geeking out over his appetites, obsessions, and taste in his movies - even if the man himself is too well groomed for the phrase “geeking out” to feel appropriately tailored to the man. Berkeley for $600 and who even, for a while, paid to have his new issues bound for preservation. This is a man who fell in love with The New Yorker in the 11th grade who once bought a bound set of forty years’ worth of the magazine from U.C. Though some are more well-served than others in terms of screen time, Anderson makes effective use out of all the stars at his disposal in this one. They’ll tell you that Wes Anderson’s new movie, The French Dispatch, is a love letter to The New Yorker magazine. That includes Benicio del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Lyna Khoudri, Jeffrey Wright, Mathieu Amalric, Stephen Park, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Liev Schreiber, Edward Norton, Willem Dafoe, Saoirse Ronan, Elisabeth Moss, Jason Schwartzman, Christoph Waltz, and Anjelica Huston. With these shorter theatrical windows, viewers only have to wait a little over a month before they can watch (or revisit) "The French Dispatch" and its entire ensemble cast of stars. We recently received the news that Anderson's latest will have its home release on Blu-ray and DVD (though not on 4K) next month, on December 28, 2021.Īs for the digital and video on demand release of "The French Dispatch," fans can pencil in the slightly earlier date of December 14, 2021. But for those who perhaps didn't get a chance to catch this film in theaters - or purposefully stayed away from doing so because of the ongoing pandemic - there is good news as far as "The French Dispatch" is concerned. Those sacrifices are necessary due to the Fold’s thinner frame.īut the real reason for the Pixel lineup’s consistently excellent photos is Google’s software, not the camera sensors. Google was unable to fit the larger sensors from the Pixel 7 Pro into the Pixel Fold, so it has a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 10.8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto sensor instead of the 50-megapixel main, 12-megapixel ultrawide, and 48-megapixel telephoto sensors found in the Pixel 7 Pro. The camera hardware isn’t quite the same. Google sets the standard for Android phones when it comes to taking photos, and in that task the Pixel Fold is almost as good as Google’s flagship Pixel 7 phones. The Pixel Fold falls short in that respect. If your phone can open up to become a tablet, you expect a tablet experience. Samsung offers more fully optimized apps that take up the entire screen when the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is unfolded. But you end up with a lot of unused space, and it doesn’t look great. And you can use two unoptimized apps side by side on the larger interior screen. Google does allow you to move the app from the left to the center to the right of your screen by double-tapping the black bars. This isn’t a massive deal for me, but it might be for other people, and for the money, I’d really hoped to get a true full-screen experience here. But other apps, including those of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Uber, and Lyft, aren’t yet optimized for the bigger screen, so you get obnoxiously thick black bars around the app interface. Google’s many first-party apps (Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Maps, Home) look great on the Pixel Fold, as do Asphalt 9, Netflix, WhatsApp, Hulu, Spotify, and TikTok. The performance is solid, but when it comes to apps that can actually take advantage of that optimized version of Android, there are some noticeable omissions. The Pixel Fold is powered by Google’s custom Tensor G2 chip, the same processor found in the Pixel 7 lineup, and it runs a version of Android 13 optimized for foldable phones that adds split-screen multitasking and a taskbar. Days of lighter usage saw closer to 30 hours on a charge, which is a fair amount more than I’ve gotten with just about any current flagship Android phone. During two days of heavy usage consisting of hours of YouTube streaming, gaming, and checking emails, TikTok, and Instagram, the device had about 16% battery life left when I went to sleep around midnight. Google says the Pixel Fold can last 24 to 33 hours on a charge, which is consistent with what I experienced in testing. With two screens, such a device’s battery life could be hit or miss. As someone with larger hands, I find it difficult to use the Galaxy Z Fold 4 for anything else without having to open the phone. The outer screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is too narrow for me to do much besides read emails and do some light web browsing. The Pixel Fold’s wider dimensions make it easier for me to write emails, watch videos, take photos, and play games on the exterior screen, without even having to unfold the phone to use its bigger display. I much prefer the short and wide design of Google’s folding phone over the long and narrow design of Samsung’s. (Then again, neither does the iPhone 14.) Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Pixel Fold actually closes completely with no noticeable gap, which creates a more streamlined look and protects the screen more effectively when the device is in a pocket or bag. Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the Pixel Fold doesn’t lie completely flat when it’s open due to its camera bump. The Pixel Fold’s polished stainless steel hinge is fairly stiff when I open it-and it’s more rigid than the one in the Galaxy Z Fold 4-but it opens and closes reasonably easily. On-screen motion is smooth, colors are bright, and the contrast is great. Both the exterior and internal displays are more than bright enough for use in direct sunlight, on a par with the Pixel 7 Pro’s screen. But I found myself getting used to the crease after just a short time with the device. I’ll cut right to the chase: Yes, the Pixel Fold has a visible crease dead center where the phone opens, just like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 does. The Pixel Fold has a responsive 5.8-inch exterior touchscreen that opens to reveal a large, 7.6-inch interior display-essentially a small tablet. However, similar to rival foldables from companies like Samsung, the Pixel Fold is extremely expensive, and most people shouldn’t spend $1,800 on it when other phones offer a great experience for much less. It’s well built, the hybrid tablet/phone experience works almost exactly how it should-aside from some minor software hiccups-and it takes the best selfies of any phone I’ve ever used. Google’s first foldable phone isn’t quite a home run, but after spending a week with the Pixel Fold, I have to admit: I love it.
